SUMYA ANANI
2016 IWBHF INDUCTEE

   

Sumya "Island Girl" Anani began her professional boxing career in August 1996. Anani fought until 2006, being one of the top female boxers in the world. In 1998 she caused a major upset by defeating Christy Martin, with a 10-round majority decision. Anani went on to win four world championships in three different weight classes. (135, 140, and 147).

Anani's boxing trainer and manager, Barry Becker, remained in that role her entire boxing career, with a boxing record of 25-3-1.

Sumya's fights have been carried on international TV including ESPN, Pay Per View, and the undercard of HBO. Sumya's highlights in boxing include the following:

World Title, GBU Junior Welterweight World Title, IBA Welterweight World Title. Anani was honored with many awards on WBAN which included:

WBAN YEARLY AWARDS --Women’s Boxing Archive Network --2005 -- Most Avoided Female Fighter; 2004 - Most Avoided Female Fighter/ 2003 - Most Inspirational Female Fighter; 2002-- Most Outstanding Female Fighter and Honorable Mention Fighter of the Year; Biggest "Knockouts" of the Year --Sumya Anani over Jane Couch, Sumya Anani over Lisa Holewyne; 2001 -- Female Fighter of the Year -- Top Televised Fight of the Year -- Sumya Anani vs. Fredia Gibbs; and 1999 - Female Fighter of the Year. 

Sumya Anani was inducted into the IWBHF in 2016.
